Being unable to get out right now I decided to look through some of my older bits, I have over the years found many pieces of cutlery from our WW1 site, nearly all are made in the USA which makes sense as back then there wasn't many cutlers here in Canada.
Now it took me some time to realize that there were NO knives only spoons and forks in these finds, any offers as to why that would be??? "soldiers don't march on soup!!"
..........HH.......Johnnn

Good question.

I did some quick research into WW1 rations and food in the trenches and it would seem in WW1 or
any military campaign, most meals are not sit down affairs involving steak etc. So yeah, soup was likely
what they were marching on, or anything that could be canned(spam anyone?) or stuffed in a pocket.

If they did come across a treat of steak I suppose they could use their bayonet.

Hi DD,
Yes I thought about the bayonet idea but have  you seen the length of a WW1 bayonet? , I'm thinking they were eating some kind of stew. Maybe training rations were different than trench rations...........HH..........Johnnn

Hi there as a newbie, but a little bit good at history, the spoons in military often had a sharper edge that would also act as a cutting edge...? maybe???  Cheesy

Yes, seems the soldiers could sharpen an edge.... see this ...

"picked up a ww1 spoon in a car boot sale years ago and half and inch the tip of it was worn away. A few months ago I seen a ww1 spoon for sale on ebay and it was in the same condition. Is there the slightest possibility that these spoons were deliberately ground down so you could cut with it as well as use is as a spoon?" Most the answers say "yes"   but some say its worn through use by a righthanded person eating with the spoon and causing wear and tear...? hmmmm

Hi E7,
I like that idea better as there is considerable wear on the edges of some spoons, but there are indications to the handedness of the owners also according to the wear......HH....Johnnn

i joined the forum today, so very glad I did! I love history, looking at artefacts, searching and finding Smiley I lived in Kent, England and know so many unmapped ancient ruins and places... its just been a case of getting a good Metal Detector and starting! I plan to start off with a cheapie (but deep finder) the Seben deep.... I know  so many places to look but can't go steep on price... I know I need at least 12 inches deep due to soil movement. Looking for lost hoardes!  Smiley Johnnn do you know the best detector under £100 uk?Huh? grateful for any good advice Smiley

Hi D D and E 7
I just couldn't resist this pic of a typical WW1 table setting using a bayonet instead of a knife sorry!.  I know I will find more of these pieces just have to see how the collection grows....

It’s so obvious to me that Johnnn suffer of  lack of detecting.
Withdrawn detecting symptoms clearly shown on the color of the fish.
