I had a request for it from the Metal_Inspector. Who wants to see trash? Ordinarily I "bag it and tag it" for the council. It's photographed and e-mailed to the council rangers. If they want the genuine articles, I keep the bags for three weeks before I toss them. I report any dangerous materials to them so they can either sift the sand lots or put cameras up to watch for drug use.

I found a bloody knife buried in one a while ago which caused all manner of forensic folks to turn up along with the police who I had called. They then asked me to do an extra tight scan of the area 2 meters around where I found the knife. I did an overlapping grid search for them but I had already cleaned the area pretty thoroughly. They've called me out since then on a contract basis.

I will GD... Wow tabdog.. I see a lot of rusty odd shaped objects... any significant finds? It also looks like you have some very old coins there... or are those bottle caps? Is that a muder weapon I see as well or is that a todlers plastic .38 revolvers... looks like you had a lot of fun and I could imagine your pulse rate as your detector started beeping....

Australia doesn't use clad coinage but the modern decimal coins are the equivalent. Down here, the coin finds are either decimal or pre-decimal. The pre-decimal finds are the old large pennies, florins, shillings, threepence, sixpence and the odd fourpence. The soil here is sandy and houses that get old get torn down, the soil scraped and hauled away. The open lot stays there for a bit until a new house gets built making pre-decimal finds more rare every day.

That day at the beach, more than half of my finds were $1 and $2 coins so it accumulated fast. The smallest coin here is the old 1c piece - no longer in circulation. The smallest coin in circulation is the 5c piece. The $2 coin is the same diameter but thicker and made of a yellow composite metal. Both slip out of pockets and hands with the same regularity so I find equal numbers of each. The $1 coin is the same diameter as the 10c piece but thicker again and made of the same composite metal as the $2. Thus, both of those coins are found in similar numbers. Then we have 20c and 50c coins which, because of their size, don't often get dropped.

That was $40, not 40c and you are too late. It's been dumped into my coin bucket which is now too heavy to lift by the handle. Last time I tried, the handle separated from the bucket. I might have to put wheels on that thing.
