This year has been great on Merc dimes for me. I just found my 5th today in the woods. Same area where I found a 1942 quarter, 3 buffalos, my first IH, and a few wheaties. Great spot, although already hunted out. Undecided Can anyone believe the extraordinary condition of this Merc? Take a look at the intact details. It looks almost uncirculated  Shocked Love it!

P.S. - Also found a 1929 Wheaty. What a coincidence!

The Mercury Liberty dime is one of the most beautifully designed coins!

I guess that it all depends on ground conditions. I know that salt may give them a black patina, but here all silver comes out clean. Now, as soon as it is exposed to Oxygen it begins to tarnish. I bought Spanish silver coins from the late 1800s to a dealer and two of them were  tarnished black. I prepared a baking soda paste and now they look shiny. I did not clean the 1929 Merc for it looks like new. Some collectors like the look of tarnished coins, but I don't.

Yeah, silver found on salt beaches is going to be black. I used my minelab e-trac yesterday. There is no coin that can possibly hide from that baby! The Merc was like 8" deep.
