Cyber, Its' the best preserved coin I've seen of that age. I've noticed that silver dimes that are found in mucky soil are badly corroded and ones found in loose sand are just black. see THIS One which was lost in muck on a river bank. I could not read the date on either the dime or quarter and it took a lot of cleaning before I found metal. I believe both were lost from 1930 to 1944 as that was when the park was operational. Interesting topic I would like to learn more about the aging of coins in the ground. gambol

For your encrusted silver coins, electrolysis is the best way to clean them. Not long ago I cleaned another encrusted 1917 Merc and it worked a miraculous come back on the beautiful coin.

Cyber, I use a chemical cleaner. Some sort of acid used for cleaning steam irons. Gets the oxide but not the metal (much). gambol
