Thought you guys might like the pics..............

The three buffalos pictured are kind of new finds.  Someone gave them to me about a dozen years ago when I wasn't into collecting old coins. I had put them into a box and had forgotten all about them. Well yesterday I was searching for some things and there they were staring at me from the bottom of the box. I was pleasantly surprised.  Smiley

They are a 1935, 1927 and an unknown date. Seems that on the buffalo nickels the date is an in area that makes it easily rubbed off??? It kinda sticks out from the already furthest sticking out part of the coin. That sorta makes sense...lol. I think you catch my drift.

The two wheaties I recently found in my penny jar that had been collecting dust for years. The 1943 Steel cent is pretty cool in my opinion.  The 1925 is pictured because it is my oldest coin. Keep in mind I'm new to this hobby!  Grin

Thanks for looking. Hopefully I didn't waste your time with these not so interesting finds.

HH!

-farmdigger

P.S. How do I get the photo size to shrink so I can post more than one pic per posting?

The detail on the 1935 is just great! Nice finds.

Look at the buffalo on the back and count the legs. There was a die break on one of the stamping dies (I forget which year) and a few thousand were stamped with only three legs making them quite rare.

It seems they were the 1937-D mint. Look anyway. You may find a new rarity.

It was kept in a protective casing thankfully. I used a towel to handle it when I took it out for the picture. I know it's nothing too special but I wanted to be careful anyway.

Thanks for the info on those rare buffalos. I had no idea.

I'll send you a pm shortly, thanks, I appreciate it.

I just went to that site you posted above about the three legged buffalo nickel. Ummmmmm........ click on the first pic of the backs of the buffalo. Than when the pic box has popped up click on the upper right hand corner of the box on the icon that is a box with an arrow shooting out of the top right. This will blow up the photo. Than scroll over to the third undated buffalo. I know its worn out but I only see three legs. I wonder if this may be a conterfeit and that is why the date is missing. Someone may have wanted to throw off the buyer. There are other examples as how to tell if its a conterfeit given on that site. I'm trying to figure it out. Would be cool if its a rare one though.  Smiley

Time to go find a magnifying glass.........

Ah, the post-hunt treasure hunt continues. This is why we are all so addicted to this hobby, mate.

Good luck.

The website,

http://www.coinsite.com/content/faq/1937d3leg.asp
, says:

-The rear leg on a genuine "three leg" will appear to have more metal gone than on the normal coin.

-It will have a series of raised dots under the belly that do not appear on the normal coin.

-Lastly look at the "P" in the word Pluribus and the "U" in the word Unum found on the left side of the buffalo. On a genuine "three leg," they will be further away from the buffalo's back than on a normal 1937-D.

The closest buffalo I have to compare it with is a 1935.  Does anyone know if it would be the same as a normal 1937-D?

The P and the U in E Pluribus Unum definately appear to be raised higher on my possible rare buffalo than on the 1935 I have.

even if this thing is normal the detective work sure is exciting!

shows a good example of a close up of the U in Unum on a normal and a rare buffalo. In the normal the U is touching the buffalo's back. In the rare it is not touching it by a millimeter or two. Mine is definitely not touching it by a millimeter or two. Hmmm.... think I'll be taking this to a coin expert!  Smiley
