Go Up Go Down

Took a walk up a hillside. Besides some barbed-wire found a few bullets and some kind of bracket. The large ball is about .580-615 inch, Most likely .58cal I guess, though could be 60cal. Pretty chunky looking and well corroded.

Round balls from 1840-1865 were iether .58 cal.  or 69 cal.

Earlier ones could go to 75 cal.

Found out one other thing about the round ball. I looked at a chart for .58 cal lead balls. Most all are a little over 400 grains. The one that I found is only 273 grains. 58 caliber round ball bullet.  The SG is 10.8 making it just under lead and just above silver. It may have voids making it to light it for it's size.

I read were in some cases zinc or copper/zinc was used after lead became short in supply. The ball is also very crude looking, maybe self made in a crude mold? The metal has the look of lead and is soft. This ball was found on a hillside were I have also found arrows and were deer, turkey and other game still roam.
