Hi all,

made it out for a hunt and found this nice piece which I believe was off of a soldiers uniform. It is in decent shape and has a five pointed star in the middle. It also has two wires in the back for attaching to the uniform which are still intact.

Any ideas or anyone with information please chime in.   Thanks          Ironman

Ironman,

On the surface, I'd tend to agree with you, although these don't match any of the uniform buttons I've seen, including those for Texas.  However, there was a lot of variation in Civil War uniforms, so it's still possible.
I could be steering you the wrong way, but if it is a civil war button and not something lost by a later cowboy or tourist, I'd look at the Confederate units first----2nd, 4th, 5th, and 7th Texas Mounted Rifles.
Keep in mind, though, that the Glorieta Pass area has been a very popular conference and resort area for a few generations.   Some of those people would have toured the battle site.

Good Luck,

BA

BA

Hello, I have only spent a few minutes researching this find.  I have not found anything that matches it yet.  It is a little bigger than a quarter so it may have been something other than a button. I have found other civil war items in the area. I have found some very interesting stuff in the area from musket balls to religious medals to an old ring that that I am sure the N.M. volunteer soldiers lost while fighting and moving through the area. This area was known for several skirmishes during the battle of Glorieta and this area is on private land miles away from the conference area.  I can guarantee that no tourists have ever set foot in this area.  I know the area very well. It is a very rugged area and one has to hike in. I did go back soon after my last find and hit the area hard. I will post some pics in just a minute on Today's Finds.  Thank you for the response.  If I find out anything else about this piece I will let you all know.

Dan, thanks!  I did go back and made some really sweet finds!  I have found some very interesting items in that area! Here is a pic. I will also post them on Today's Finds.

Ironman
Heres a pic of what I beeped up after being motivated from my last find.

Thanks dan!  We are expecting another snow storm here tonight.  Puts a damper on the hunting for awhile.
