Heading back once again tomorrow, sometimes too many people are fishing, hard to get get in the good spots. Hope to post more soon! yesterday I found a 1936 canadian cent, heard they made a rare "dot" one that year...kinda hard to read the coin though, it has crap all over it that I can't remove. Wish I knew a way! Wink

Good Luck Tomorrow !! There were some excellent posts on this Forum several weeks ago about coin cleaning and "Electrolysis" ? Maybe someone else remember's , try not rub the dirty coin too much . My Alzheimer's prevents me from providing  that link right now .

Have you thought about using Acetone as a means to clean the specimen?  Anything else would probably damage the coin and seriously reduce any of its potential numismatic value.

CVS Drug Store sells 16oz bottles of pure acetone in its nail care section for about 4.95 USD.  (Acetone can also be ordered on the internet, but in my experience it's costlier when factoring in shipping, etc.)  You will not want to use any other acetone product like nail polish remover.  It contains other ingredients that can damage the specimen.

Essentially, with the pure acetone, the idea is to soak the specimen to loosen any dirt, cake, etc. (but not rub, scrub, or otherwise).  Just ensure that you use a glass container for the acetone and coin.  Also, some folks recommend keeping the soaking coin out of sunlight; they theorize that the sun's UV can cause an undesireable reaction with the acetone and copper.  After several hours, you can remove the coin carefully, rinse with distilled water, and repeat.
