Go Up Go Down

X and Peter both have been busy, Nice finds you guys! That is what makes it worth it. I think I'm going out tomorrow morning before daylight.

About Acids to clean Iron. The strong acids won't touch rust. Sulpheric, Nitric and Muratic (HCL) go right for the metal. the rust just sits there and smiles while the acid eats the base metal. On the other hand, Phosphoric acid and Oxalic acid are relatively weak acids that go for the rust and leave the base metal behind. Some rust converters are weak solutions of phosphoric acid suspended in a latex base. The phosphoric reacts with the rust and the reaction stops when all the water in the rust is used up. (rust, even dry rust is a Hydroxide in part) The latex base seals the phosphated rust so no more water can get in. Paint over it and you have got a good sound surface. The secret to rust converters is making sure the part is completely dry after converting (NO HEAT) and sealed with a good coat of paint......All that being said, strong acids are often used to remove oxides from metals in "pickling baths" What happens is the acid removes the top layer of metal and the rust sloughs off with it. This doesn't work so well if the object is heavily rusted or if it has any oil on it which prevents the acid from getting to the base metal. Pickling is usually done on metal that is lightly oxidized but otherwise clean. . I always save the acid from dead storage batteries for pickling. As you know, electrolysis is the way to go for heavily rusted stuff. Gambol

Gambol thanks for the information  Great I did not listen to X as he just wants to eat my iron away  No no! but I did use electrolysis and most of the rust has gone and the iron is still there  Great I may just give it a wax coat afterwards, but am not sure yet,,,,, still to be decided  Grin Grin Grin

Hope you do well on your trip  Great

X, I am your friend and can rub salt in the wound, remember food without salt is useless, so I am making you good  Shocked
