Thanks Silver Searcher that site is a good plan. I would love us to have one like that for South African finds.

I agree.  Sounds to me like you may have found an old cricket field in which case you could turn up some really interesting finds in addition to more cricket badges.

 Hi Johnnn

The collection is growing slowly but surely and I'm slowly running out of space to place it all, so I will be making frames to hang up on the wall.

Hi BA

Funny you should say that as I was thinking the same thing but this site is far out of any town or would have been in them days but you never know could be a cricket site.I will be going there again this weekend with Peter perhaps we will find more. I would love to find another Sash buckle or any thing that has to do with cricket.

All the best
Xavier

Well, two possibilities quickly jump to mind:   1) Doesn't South Africa have ghost towns?  If so, your site could have been a much more populated location at one time.
2) Depending upon what else you find, it could have been the playing field for one or more military encampments.   Doesn't take long for a group of bored soldiers to get together a game of baseball, football, soccer, rugby, etc.    And where one of those happens, I can almost guarantee there will be wagering on the side.

BA

Yes you do have a point there. At the time this place and the town was one big farm about 20Km by 10Km but that dose not mean that the farmer was not keen on cricket and it could well be that farmers from around gathered there to play cricket once a month or so. It could very be that this was the only outing that they could have. I must see if there WAIT we found an old cast-iron pot there all in pieces but it's out there and at the same depth as the rest of the stuff that we found and Peter found a piece that came off an ox wagon ( I'll have to post that some time) I think that I'm going to have to research this farm a bit more LOL
