It could be a brooch or a tie pin as you said. Now the fact that it has a second piece attached may indicate that its owner was into horses, probably horse racing. Where did you find the nice piece? Beach? Park?

I found it at a small park/playground next to a church here in Marietta, Ga. I think that in the past somebody has put an extra layer of dirt and the first 10-15 inches are coming from somewhere else but don't know for sure, it just looks different than the soil around.

I know what you are talking about sodding parks with dirt from somewhere else. I have come across with parks in which the new added dirt comes with fragments of heavy  metals from old building demolitions or something of that nature. I've dug out chunks of plumbing, sewer pipes, bricks, hinges, you name it.  Angry

Your particular piece does not look like something typically found in a play lot, thus it may came from somewhere else, unless daddy or mommy brought their babies to the tot lot and lost it while playing w them. Excellent piece, please keep it!  Clapp

Is there any way of weighing it or finding out the
type of metal it is made from?

The rusted iron residues on the back seems to indicate that it is not made of a precious metal. Probably gold plated or bronze jewelry.

Cyberborikua, I am not an expert but I am sure this is not gold plated, it might be bronze though. I'll keep it because the horses are really detailed, simply beautiful, will anybody suggest what's the best way to clean it?

mki, was there a racetrack or some other kind of equestrian landmark around where you found it?

Yes, I thought of gold plated for being a brooch or tie clip. It can be bronze which may make it vintage as well.

Great find. I agree that it was probably two different pieces. The three horse heads look like racing Thoroughbreds and the full horse is a Draft type horse. Each serves different purposes. Nice piece for your collection.
