Go Up Go Down

Going over my front yard again
I get a repeating 8-10 on the 705
8 inches deep pin point and run my pin pointer over the area before I dig
Get down to around 7 inches and check the dirt I took out of the hole nothing in it check the hole its still in there clean a little more diet out didn't notice anything checked the hole again with pin pointer nothing checked dirt I had taken out and the pin pointer goes off

I thought what the heck picked up what was setting the pin pointer off and ran it across the coil of the 705 sure enough that was it can't even figure out what it is though it looks like a piece of coal.

Will take some pics and post them up in a bit

The pictures will definitely help.   Most likely, it is a "clinker" which is the trash left over from a boiler fire-box.   They are especially common within hauling distance of old railroad tracks (people would scour the tracks for coal chunks that had fallen off the tender).

That makes sense

I've broke pieces off of this and the small pieces aren't setting the PP off but the larger chunk still is

You learned a good lesson there.
Every detector, whether full size or pinpointer, has a limit as to how small a piece of metal it will pick up (that does vary depending on things such as density or type of metal for reasons GD can speak to better than can I).   The size limit will vary from detector to detector.   That's one cause of "empty holes", at least in the areas I hunt.  If you aren't properly ground balanced, a patch of black sand will set off your detector, but if you scatter the magnetite enough while your digging your hole, you lose the signal.  (and other times you'll find that the true culprit is a little sliver of metal about the size of a stable leg in just one of those chunks you broke off.

Your find looks like rust encrusted steel or iron. You'll have to take a chance and keep digging at it to be sure.
