WOW!! what a find, I too would like to see a picture of your water tool. Thanks for the tips. We have a lake around here with a swim area. In your picture it looks like your meter is under water??? I thought all you could get wet was the ring?? new to the water stuff, but very interested. Thanks for all the info and help! Have a great night.

Bigfox, it looks to me as though he is using his minelab excalibur II, in which case it is fully submerisble and enclosed in a waterproof case......as long as the case doesn't have cracks in it and his seals are good, he's fine diving with it to about 200 ft.   But don't try that with a detector that isn't made for that kind of hunting.  You definitely do NOT want to go in as deep as he is with your XLT  Wink

Hi Bigfox! Bitberg Aggie is correct, it is a minelab excalibur II. I used an excalibur for about 15 years and just traded up to the newer model. In my humble opinion this is the best all around water machine in existence. I swear by mine. When you use one for a while you can tell by the tones if the target is a penny or a dime or a quarter or a nickel or pull tab or a gold ring. Gold has a solid sweet low tone unlike anything else. There are gold items that have a higher tone but the good rings somehow have that sweet whisper to them. There are a lot of good water machines out there, the Tesoro stingray series is an economical way to go and they will find the small gold better than any other machine. I always set it to crackel on a bobby (hair) pin. Use that setting and you'll get all the gold. Fisher 1280 x's can be found for around $300.00 used, they are a great machine. Whites has several water machines, I had leak problems with them and they love hot rocks. When you are neck deep in water you don't want to dig false signals like hot rocks. There are a lot of members on this forum that are much better hunters than I am. I can only say pick a machine, learn to trust it, it can't lie to you, you just have to understand what it is saying. Be comfortable with the machine you use. Don't go on a hunt if you are mad at the world. You won't enjoy the thrill of the hunt or the solitude of just you and the threshhold. I use a stainless steel scoop that was custom made by a gentleman in Missouri. It has 3/8 holes that capture almost any target I find. Once in a while it will be small enough to go through the holes, I redig, hold my hand under the drain holes and either work the target slowly out or take it to shore and retrieve it there. It is usually a 22 shell, a small earing or earring retainer or a small lead weight. If you are truely interested in learning water hunting let me know. I would be glad to assist in any way I can and i'm sure members like Bitberg Aggie would also lend some expertise. I'll tell you one thing, the first time you see the glint of gold in the scop, you'll be hooked. I can close my eyes and see almost every ring or chain I've scooped. That swimming hole you spoke of might just be your private honey hole. I have a couple for now, but I'm sure sooner or later they will be discovered by other hunters. All I can say is they'll have stiff competition! Here are some pics of the rings I found last year and this year so far, the gold ones. The silver were found over the years. I sold most of my gold a couple years ago when it was at $600.00 an oz. Wish I knew then what I know now! Happy hunting and try the water. You can't go wrong! 38fordpu.

Hi 38fordpu

I for one would be most interested in a write up about water hunting I have just the spot but the bottom is covered with rock we use to have a lock leading to the see from the marina but it was always filling with sand so the home owners association decided to do away with the whole thing at low tide there is only 2 feet of water 50m from the beach at hight tide you cant go in the water rises 1.5m never really tried to measure it but that's my guess I have found a lot of sinkers just by looking for them no detector used and sometimes the water is so still that you are looking directly at the see floor as if there were no water.

Regards Xavier
