Well I got to bed around 130amEST, after returning from CW relic hunting in south central Kentucky, and here is what I found. My 11" DD coil was acting strange too. Ugh. BUT I found my FIRST SILVER---WOOT! It is an 1840-O Half Dime (No drapery for you coin nuts) in very good condition(I think) It was literally under 2" of dirt, right underneath a newly planted corn stalk, and it read foil at first, but a solid sound to it, it ended up showing 71 on the Omega. It was dropped by a rebel soldier during the battle of Perryville. One thing to notice (my first one to date) is in the upper left hand corner of the picture as it is a "hot rock". Those hot rocks read bullet when hunting! WEIRD

Congrats on the half-dime.  Just one question---why are you so sure it was dropped by a Southern soldier?   Smiley  (if you look in your pocket, I'm sure you'll find coins from more than one mint---not to mention folks on both sides emptied the pockets of prisoners and the dead) Smiley

But regardless of who lost it, it and the rest of the finds are really neat.  Thanks for sharing them.

Good question bitburg!  I just think it was as this is where the confederate were attacked (killed, wounded, etc) and where they set up their firings from.  And it was from New Orleans. Wouldn't only the southern states have these coinage mints back then?

If not, then I guess it could have been a union guy that dropped it, but I just got to thinking that it was rebel...  Detecting  then  Shocked then  Kiss  MY FIRST SILVER!  Yeehaw!

Admittedly people didn't move around nearly as quickly back then as they do now, but remember tha New Orleans was a major seaport AND that the best way to economically get goods into Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, etc prior to the Civil War (and for that matter after the war) was up the Mississippi River and it's tributaries.....Same thing goes for getting there stuff to market---ship it down the Ohio/Mississippi to New Orleans, and then put it on an ocean going vessel to a port elsewhere.   Lots of people from lots of regions of the country (and the world) were doing business in Louisiana or along that river route and at everyone of them, coins were changing hands.

But no matter who dropped it, it's a great first silver (sure beats my first which was a 1943 war nickel  Wink )
