While I can see what you are saying Seldom, I tend to not agree with
the "don't make waves" approach when it comes to the rights of the
citizens/taxpayers to enjoy public property such as school grounds, parks
and etc. I too have seen too many public servants that do not understand
what "public" means and grossly overstep their authority. This usually ends
up with a polite confrontation that very often ends up a win-win situation when
handled properly. Suffice it to say that I agree to disagree with your
suggested approach and wish Robroy59 the best on his return to that site.

Thanks for all the feedback.  I think if I am confronted next time, I will ask for a "Learning Experience".
After all, we are in a learning environment, right?
Asking why someone believes what they do will help me to understand his position, and if I need to
debate the reasoning, provide me with a proper background.
It may be that his security company trains him to act in that manner, or it might be that he is just
flexing his control muscles to see if someone will do what he says.
I try not to be confrontational in most situations, because negative vibes create negative feedback.
When push comes to shove, I like to step out of the way and let them fall on their faces.

Seldom is right. I cannot imagine a confrontational situation becoming a win for the detectorist. First of all detecting is not a "right" on public property. Secondly it is very easy for them to find a reason for no detecting like damaging the grass or leaving holes uncovered. Or in the case of the school, "unauthorized" person on school grounds.  Thirdly the public employee has a boss and his boss has a boss and so on. Expect them all to back each other reguardless of how flimsey the reason is. Very quickly it becomes 3 or 4 against one and they have reasons to deny while you have no equally strong reasons for hunting.....Think of it this way. If you want to hunt in,,lets say, a public park and before you go there you contact Your County Commissioner who has the authority to let you. The Commissioner is going to contact the head of the Parks Department and ask what he thinks. The Head of the Parks department might ask the Supervisor of the park and so on. Since the request came down from above there is a reasonable chance you will get to hunt there. but If you get confrontational with the people at the bottom and try to push it back up to the Commissioner it will never happen because everybody in the line will object and when it gets to the Commissioner he or she won't go against the employees... I know, I speak from experience both ways. gambol.  Wise Wise
