I think we might be getting somewhere.  My brother-in-law is an archy from Spain.  I've got his interest piqued with this mystery coin now as well!!  If you could send me those high rwes shots that would help tremendously.

He noticed that there are fleurs de lis on it, leading him to think initially that it might be French.  We'll see where that goes too.

I'll see what I can do about sending some better pictures, also I'll check out the site you posted.

Thanks David...........................John in Va...

We both figured it out at the same time!  Mine was a hunch.  He has a picture!  Back with the details!!   Tongue

Well, after many hours of scouring the interweb with no success, I decided to ask my brother-in-law, who happens to be an archy, what he thought about it.  He found pictures within a few hours!  Should have asked him first, I guess!   Wink

Anyway, enough with the babbling!  Let's see some pictures!

The site is in French, but I think you can use the Google translate button to see it in English, if you wish.

The second seems to be a slightly newer version, VIIII.

It was designed as a weight for the quadruple golden pistole of Italy, or the Golden Ecu.  The question is, how did this end up in Virginia?!!

Here is another link which provides some better pictures and more info.  It seems that this weight is linked to Vatican State coinage!!

The script is slightly different so I am going to keep looking, but I think this is a good start!

Enjoy and congrats on such a unique find, John!

Cheers,
Dave

Thanks Dave.......Your help is really appreciated in finding the answer to the puzzle. The location where it was found was probably settled in the 1600s or there abouts. Maybe I can return the favor some day...It may have some monetary value........hope so.. Have a good evening....

You are very welcome, John!  It was quite fun tracking it down!  Hopefully that site will continue to tell it's story!

Happy hunting!
