Go Up Go Down

I borrowed a Garret 200 from work and went to the backyard.  My little girl (3 1/2) didn't think that "treasure hunting" was as fun as dad had made it out to be and only made it about 30 minutes before we had to retire to the swing.  It was enough to set the hook in me though!  I was able to get in about an hour the next day and found more.  I learned the Garret a tiny bit more and am already scoping out other places that might yield some goodies.
It's funny, my uncle took me out somewhere outside of Atlanta 35 years ago and all I remember was sweating and being thirst and a few chunks of lead being found.  I know I didn't enjoy it as much as my uncle but I never forgot it.  My interest has grown til I couldn't not try it.  We'll see what happens.  Thanks to everyone who posts here because I have been on the site constantly in the past week and have learned alot w/o even digging.

Ah, my first time.  Good times, good times.  Eventually you'll find something that will have you hooked for life.  I sure did and that 1856 penny will always have me hooked.  Hope you learn your Garrett inside and out and then hopefully you can present us with some fantastic finds!! If you have any questions, feel free to ask away. Wink

Go Up Go Down

I remember my first time. It was with Lulu in the back seat of my . . . oops. That's the wrong first time

I saw lots of detector users out there in parks and school grounds. One guy showed me a handful of silver coins he had found. Rare guy but he made my heart go all bumpy at the idea of me finding that kind of stuff. Off the the local shop and a brand new metal detector was in my hands.

To my surprise, it found metal. Lots of it. All kinds of metal. In fact, it was so annoying digging up metal that I nearly gave up until I calmed down and read the manual about how to make it more efficient by changing the settings. Heh. Live and learn. I started finding more valuable stuff than I did when I first turned it on. Since then, I've actually found myself reverting to lower and lower discrimination levels. I can't even begin to count the number of gold and silver chains that have been rejected as foil and rings that were determined to be pull tabs by my ever-so-smart detector.

My rule of thumb is simple. If I start finding good stuff right away at any given site, I lower my discrimination immediately and cover the same ground again. It's worked for me in almost every case that the area I just covered will give up some gold or silver that was previously rejected.

Have fun, mate.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
