Go Up Go Down

I am patiently working my 1917 house yard.  I have dug a LOT more nails and foil.  Yesterday I dug up this metal seal or block.  It appears to be lead, very soft and heavy.  I think it could be a printing block?  Any other ideas?
I made an impression in play dough to try to get a better image of the engraving.

It does look like part of a printing plate.

Thanks, I think it is part of a printing plate.  Looking closely, I think its a mans legs in blousy pants and shoes above the date.?
I have been able to find out that this house was built by a German Baker.  He had a bakery on the town square for many years.  He may have traveled? Apparently he was successful.  They tell me it took four years to build the house!

Given the fact that we think it may be a printing plate and the house was built by a baker, I'd suggest looking at local papers between 1876 and 1920 for any advertisements that may look similar to that.   (given the anti-German sentiment during the 1917-1918 period, I'd look at that period first....probably trying to assure his clientele that he is as American as they are)....You should be able to find copies either in the main local library, unless it is small in which case I'd go to nearest large city and look in either their main library or at a university library.

Thanks!
I am reading reading Mueller's "Treasure Hunting Manual #6" and it just hit me that this guy was a successful baker, and I should be looking  deeper into the yard for a cache!
I will research the local papers.

Always a good plan Brad, but I have found that lots of successful business owners hide money in the house so they could get at it fast. Check for hiding places in the house and outbuildings  etc .

Hi, I liked the playdough idea--really brought those details out more plainly...It definitely has the appearance of some sort of item to commemorate the Centennial,etc....could be printing block? or maybe some type of seal, etc. But definitely has the date 1876 on it and the metal looks to be either lead or pewtwer? Pretty dang neat find! I've got a few finds that I've never had a definite ID on and some of those items are not entirely in one piece...and your find is definitely not all in one piece, but enough of it is there to probably get a definite ID on it anyhow...From someone..GOOD LUCK AND GOOD HUNTING!
