Just got back from France. Found this lump of quartz with shiny stuff in it while kayaking down the Lot river. Sorry about the blurry photo, was having a hard time taking a close up of it + came out even worse when I cropped it. Also found some gold in a piece of quartz in the wall of a medieval church. I didn't pry it out of there for fear of fire + brimstone and such.

Did you find it with a metal detector?

No, I was just sitting on the riverbank picking through rocks while enjoying a particularly awesome piece of fruitcake that I'd taken along for a picnic. I would have happily sat there all day picking through rocks, but I was supposed to be kayaking with the family.

I would like to get out there with a detector, I bet there's more shinies to be had. No idea what prospecting/panning laws are like though.

Thanks for the info Greasemunkey,

I'll take my detector to the Lot valley next time I'm over there (about a 4 hr drive). The laws are very restrictive in France (I'm still trying to learn about them thoroughly) but I understand beaches and shoreline are ok. As for private property, you must have written permission and as far as the public property, you must have written approval from the governmental office (sous-perfecture). When it comes to archeological digs/historical monuments, et al., Don't even think about it!!!

I found this piece a couple of miles West of Entraygues where a creek flows into the river from the north. There's a bunch of quartz spilling out into the river there. Looking at the map on my touristy kayaking trip flier, it looks like it may be the Ruisseau de la Mine, but just about all the creek outlets I saw out that way had loads of quartz coming down.
There were sand and gravel banks all over the place too. Found some really fine stuff in the gold pan from a gravel bank, but I wasn't really looking too hard. The spot was chosen for its picnicking rather than its gold-bearing qualities. Yeah, I took a 10" pan all the way to France with me just in case, but sadly didn't have very much time to use it.

I figured there had to be some shinies around there somewhere because the whole area is one giant sprawling mass of volcanos. I had done a little sniffing around on the internet before my trip and found a few records of gold mines in the region.
I really don't know if there are mass riches to be found, but the countryside around there is absolutely awesome so it's certainly no great hardship hanging around in the river there for a few hours  Smiley

Paul.

Yes Grease Munkey,

You are correct, the countryside is absolutely gorgeous... I was thinking that perhaps I would retire there but I needed a little more like access to medical care, access to the TGV (speed train), etc.. I would love to visit there again soon. My wife belongs to a spinning/weaving group that meets about an hour away. Perhaps I will make a weekend of it, one day for her and one day for me and I will take my MD with me (actually, by then I will have two MDs and she can use one). I will research the landmarks that you listed and get a map.. Thanks, Coloma Gold

Oh - the church in Conques... there's a stone staircase to the right of the building. About halfway down there's a lump of quartz in the wall with some gold in it. Avision says it's OK to take it  Grin

And don't feed the donkeys. My mum found out they have a taste for fingers.

No thanks... I will leave it in the old church... The french are really tough on those who take things from what may be peceived as archeological, historical, etc. I have read the exerpts of the law and it is a little ambiguous and therefore any doubt goes in favor of the government. The penalties include jail, fines, confiscation of your metal detector (and auto), etc. I don't need to take those kinds of risks. I'll leave those risks to those who don't mind the consequences....Coloma Gold
