Doh. Are you sure? I stabbed at it with a penknife and it didn't crumble like all the other stuff.

Oh - the church in Conques... there's a stone staircase to the right of the building. About halfway down there's a lump of quartz in the wall with some gold in it. Avision says it's OK to take it  Grin

And don't feed the donkeys. My mum found out they have a taste for fingers.

LOL  dont do that!! if I were in france, the last thing I'd be thinking about is  little piece of gold. With all that gorgeous countryside and history, You'd have to pry my hands off my detector looking for relics and old coins (legally)

Hehe, was thinking the same thing myself. There's local stores around there full of old artillery shells all polished up that people have found. I'd love to dig up one of those (preferably a dead one)

Right, I'm off to the river. I'm gonna find a real bit of gold one day. Think I'm going to take my beat up tracker IV and see if it does me any good.

I heard there are some farmers in France and England that make a business out of renting their fields to detectorist. I was wondering how much and how you would get a list of them.

That may be true, especially in the areas of the major battles. I live in the provence area and haven't heard that. My landlady owns about (5) 5-acre parcels (2 hectares each) and invited me to search them freely. Her sister owns another 4 or 5 similar parcels and wants me to search her's also. So, it appears I have lots of areas to check. Furthermore, they grew up here and know a lot of other farmers so I think I have plenty of areas that I will have access to. Now, whether they will produce many finds is another guess. But considering that I just received my new detector today, I will be enjoying the challenge and will post anything that I may find (I found a 1921  10 centime piece last week). Coloma Gold

Its a good hobby for someone with lots of time and and interest in coins and such. With all that land you have your work cut out. I'm waiting to see some of your finds.

Yep,

I got my XLT in 1999 and due to my working a lot, really did not use it all that much. Now that I am retired (last year), I have time on my hands. My wife is going to get the XLT and I got a DFX today. I am re-learning the XLT as many of the features as same/similar. We plan to use both on the dry land and at the beaches. I'll keep everyone posted if I happen to find anything worth mentioning. Coloma Gold
