Go Up Go Down

Went to the beach today to hunt with a friend who is now here on this forum. We went on a rainy day with storms forecast which meant the potential for lots of shifted sand. We were not let down in that regard. There were culverts which channeled street runoff to the sea and those made deep cuts in the sand. My mate had been using high discrimination to eliminate junk while I always use none at all. I set my threshold to barely audible, all metal mode, maximum volume and off I go.

In a short time, I had a handful of coins and he was showing 2. We played around a bit and he set his machine up for no discriminate, threshold barely audible and maximum volume. At the end of the hunt, he reported his best coin haul ever with two small pieces of jewelry in the mix. This is a highly hunted stretch of beach which gets a lot of pressure year round so this was no small feat.

Here's a picture of my pal checking out a gorgeous surfer chick who happened to pass by. Say, is he leaning a bit to the left from the weight of his coin pouch or is he REALLY checking the surfer chick out?

There's a reason for not posting pictures immediately when valuable items are found in Western Australia. There is a matter of legality when jewelry is found or anything that has a value over intrinsic value. Coins are no problem at all unless it happens to be a coin in a pendant, for example. The reason is that the law here requires all found items be turned in to the police for to see if the owner can be located. A ring, for example, would be turned in and be held for 6 months to be sure the owner cannot be located. After that period, the item would be returned to the finder and can then be sold, kept or given away. The law here is one that addresses the so called crime of "theft by discovery."

A picture posted here might give a dishonest person (someone scanning the web looking for pictures of lost rings) a perfect description so they could go claim it when it is not actually theirs. Because of that most Aussies won't post pictures of high value finds until after that waiting period. To me it is not a dilemma but to some it is. I routinely turn in finds of high value and have always got a few in the queue at the police station.

The other side of it is the question of who wants to see a pile of old, partly corroded modern coins? They are not quite as juicy and exciting to look at as a gold or silver ring.

Even in winter, the view is terrific when warm days happen. The Aussie gals love to parade down to the beach in their bikinis and we beach hunters don't even notice them being so focused on treasure. Right. If you believe that . . . check my pulse. I must be dead.

Hm, I could understand that rule.  I mean, it is quite simple and easy to say "Its mine!".  Not being able to know the description of the ring/lost item when asked.  I see where it is going.  Here where I live in the US, it is more finders keepers, unless there is a add out somewhere about a lost ring or something. Grin

On that trip I was using a Minelab Eldorado MK II and my mate was using a Minelab Excalibur. In our machines, the threshold only affects the audio level at which the detector responds to a positive target. We both adjusted them until the sound just went completely silent and then moved it back into the audio range again. That tiny, barely audible tone is what I refer to. Any target of even the smallest size will trip it into the audio. It can make the difference between finding an earring or missing it.
