Interesting thing I picked up  from map & information Dowsing southern NM, is that it appears to have been a  practice  by some miners in the past, to dig a large hole in the desert and bring  the Gold ore from distant mines and dump in the hole to conceal it until they had the opportunity to smelt it later.

Whether this turns out to be true, or not, it's an interesting concept.  Let's get the Gold first, then we will worry about getting it ready for the market. Dell

Hi Dell, yes, and the mining engineers handbook also mentions the practice of backfilling underground tunnels with good ore which was not #1.   Many ore piles outside of mines here carry over 8 ozs (Ag) per ton when smelted, because back then that was not profitable enough to move.  When considering the roads and transport of the time it is easy to see the biggest problem was transportation.  There should be stashes of ore all over the place, and thats a good call on your part.  One of the favored stashes of this type were accomplished easily by dumping the load in a narrow wash, and then caving the sides of the wash in.  You could bury many tons this way in a few hours time.
