Go Up Go Down

Not having any place better to take the local club on our monthly club hunt, we decided to take them to a place about 2 and 1/2 hours north of Phoenix.  It's a place I've wanted to check out for a while now and that my club has never officially hunted---although 4 or 5 of the older members hit the spot about 20 years ago.  Basically, it's a location just west of a major state highway consisting of a steel railroad bridge dating to 1928 and the old highway bridge with a dirt road between the tracks and the new highway.  We also believe that there was an older wooden trestle rail bridge that predated the current structure.
Even though we had 22 members hunting for 2 to 4 hours, not much was found.  Of course, part of that was because most weren't thinking about where the construction camp should have been and were going for easier hunt site access.  Consequently they probably never got within a quarter mile of where the wife and I and 3 other members were hunting.
About 3 hours in, the wife's pinpointer had already started acting up on her, which meant I had surrendered mine to her......then my detector was giving me the first sign that my batteries were getting low, AND both of us were starting to get low on water with moderately high temperatures (95 F / 35 C) and higher than usual humidity.   So she told me she'd watch my equipment if I'd go back and get batteries and more water.  I just can't say "No" to that woman.  About 10 minutes or so after I left, the other 3 decided they had enough and headed back to the vehicles to.  Sometime between the time they left I got back, she dug up a 1900 Liberty/V nickel---not 6 feet from where I had my detector and pick leaning against the branches of a tree.  In fact she still hadn't filled in the hole which was on the other side of the tree from my detector.
That was her first V nickel.   Other significant finds included a pocket watch missing just the hands and the bezel and a pre-1900 38 or 40 caliber pistol round.   Most of the rest of the stuff was run of the mill construction site junk.

I feel for you.  Even through the tightest part of our lockdown, in Arizona we could still go out for recreational/exercise purposes as long as social distancing and other protocols were in place.  Since they specifically included Golf as a permitted activity, we figured no one could legitimately say metal detecting wasn't allowed....especially outside the cities.  After all, it's pretty hard to spread the virus when you have a maximum of 4 people per hectare.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
