I was just wondering if all Gold is Hallmarked/ I went for a quick d Detecting this morning on the beach and got a ships steering wheel pendant that is either gold plated or gold, I know it feels heavy enough for its size but I don't know  Idiot . Do all jewellers mark there pieces if making a special order or do some not bother or am I just in the land of wishful thinking?   Idea Thanks, Z.

Hallmarks are mainly used by the major manufactures and some big jewelery stores. All that is required of the small mom and pop shops or the old man casting in his garage is if its sold it must be marked with the gold content 10k 14k 18k. I have found several pieces over the years that had no marks at all so yeah you may have a good find.

I was talking with a friend recently , and he told me lots of stuff outa China has no marks at all.
He said no jewlers rerarly want to touch the stuf for repairs ...
Also in the UK if something is marked 18k and it get's an assay and comes back differnt, its smashed to bits and sent back.

I had a mate jeweller look at the piece and he told me that the whole thing has been machined and is probably 9 carrot gold coated brass. That it probably was a key ring and that some yatchy more than likely paid a fair bit for it considering the workmanship. As soon as I find the connector cord for the camera to the computer, I'll post some pics of what I have been finding. Besides the ships wheel, today I got a E.P.A.S. fork with some of the nickel showing through. Sooner or later I will have a few good finds as I just keep going out and swinging and not even my luck can be that bad considering the hours I put in, lol Smiley Z.

Nice info to know, Seldom and all (not all gold is hallmarked)
Bummer, it's not solid gold Zoro.
I bought some "gold rings" on ebay from china, that are supposed to be 10-14 karat gold, most with "precious gems", haha. They look nice is why I bought them, but, I hold little hope they are actually valuable. Will have them appraised someday, but, want to imagine value for a while first.

The jewellery business is a very interesting business to say the least with little enforcement of the rules at the bottom. More the one guy has cast a ring in his garage from 10k and stamped it 14k more then one person in the local collage has mixed 10k and 14k scrape cast a piece and marked it 14k.
In the 80's the ruling arm of the board of jewelers tried to get everyone to stamp the finish pieces with 14kp 10kp etc.
The term 14KP stands for "karat plumb" gold---meaning exactly 14K....no more, no less. KP does NOT, I repeat does NOT mean plated. It is solid 14K gold. Karat weights are usually determined with a small, fractional variance allowed by law. Katar gold which has NO fractional variance at all is called "plumb" gold -- typically identified with a "KP" hallmark. Thinking KP means gold plate is a common mis-conception. Just Google 14KP and you'll get the entire explanation of the origin.

Up until then anything over 13.5 karat could be marked 14k and the big boys took advantage of that.

This pretty much looks like the same thing without the key chain attachment, I did a Google search to find it and hope that this isn't considered spamming for a site as that is not my intention. I just wanted to show ppl what I found. I have no affilation to this site and  DON'T want anyone buying through here. Please let me know if I have breached any rules by posting the link so I don't do it again. Z.
