Go Up Go Down

I've been trying to sneak in some hunting every day I work by getting up a few hours earlier than I have to so I can get at least an hour or so of detecting in before I have to get ready to go in to work. All I really set my mind on is finding at least one interesting object each time and that satisfies me - because it adds up at the end of the week when I look at them all. There's good days and slow ones but I'm sure everyone here knows the feeling: It's just good to be out hunting no matter what!

I've managed to find about 10 rings so far but none have been solid gold - just G.F., etc - but there's been many foreign coins, relics and old jewelry popping up. Mostly Victorian era stuff. Oldest coin so far since April has been an 1837 Netherlands copper cent. No idea how that got over in my neck of the woods. (I'll upload some of the stuff I found lately but I'll leave out the junk: broken pocket watch covers and other assorted whatsits)

Anyway, I am running this post too long and I need to get out and do some hunting on my day off here! LOL

Thanks for reading and I hope you all have FANTASTIC LUCK!!!   Wink

That is a great group of finds!  The oldest coin sure is a new one to me.  I have to ask what that little axe is made of... copper or gold?

You seem to be getting a good bit of gold.  Do you go thru a lot of trash to get them or are you in a low trash area? My spots are so polluted with pull tabs most of the time that I give up on those targets pretty quickly.  I can only imagine how many times I have passed up my first gold find without even thinking about it.

Also, just for fun, is that a cub scout ring with the wolf on it?

Yea - I find a LOT of pull tabs too, but I find that as long as I pay attention thew the way the signal is bouncing back and forth between pulltab and the next icon that it will be worth digging. Sometimes I just dig every pulltab signal and have been surprised that about half of them ween't even pull tabs! (Other assorted objects and oddness - but better than the dreaded pulltabs though!) One of the guys that first taught me a few tricks about detecting said he ususally digs 50 pull tabs and then stops and takes a break from it and concentrates on other signals. I do the same when it gets too much but I find that often enough I never get to the 50 mark before a ring or some other cool thing pops up. Keep me going..

Yes - it is a Cub Scout neckerchief slide - Wolf Cub to be exact. Second one I found so far. I'm not sure what the axe is made of - might be lead or something. I figure it's from a toy firetruck from the 30's-40's possibly.

Hope you find a gold ring on your next hunt!!

I noticed that you have a 505 as well.  Is that the unit that you are speaking of with the ID's?  I will remember to look for targets to float between the 2nd and third lowest ID's.  Maybe it will help me.  I also need to break out the little lady's jewelry and air test some stuff.  I have been getting in the habit of ignoring anything between the 2nd lowest and the dime ID's so I have no doubt that I have been missing out on a few things.

I change my tactics depending on the spot but it is time for me to start getting some gold so I will just have to man up on the pull tabs I guess.

That is a nice bag of loot there.  You've inspired me to hunt a little at my mom's house on the bayou later today.  It has pretty good possibilities.  Have a good weekend.

Yes, I use the 505 and use barely enough discrimination to not drive me crazy with all the "beeping" as I find it get's the rings and gold down deeper - love that machine. I use a Whites CoinMaster as well (found it used for $25 and had to have it for a backup - works great!) and the same is true for that model I find. On the Whites I only block out the Iron/Nails section and leave in the foil, etc - because many times I have found rings and jewelry very shallow and it gives a very weird signal - almost a "cuff" sound. Checking every one is work but I take the garbage out with me and I find the next time I hit that area there isn't as much to contend with.

I tried a couple new areas this afternoon and managed to find a silver and turquoise ring and one other ring that I thought might be gold but was disappointed when I saw the "Avon" hallmark - Damn! Oh well. Ring is a ring. Makes three for the two days I went out so I figure I have both machines dialed in. Only a matter of time before the gold pops out. Talked with a couple people and got permission to hunt some older yards on Sunday. The quick couple passes I had while showing the person how it worked netted me a couple wheats (56 and a 45) so it's got some potential I think.

(I did notice that I have been finding many more nickels with this setting and that is another good indicator that you are in the "zone". Rings, pulltabs and gold seem to inhabit this area in my experience. Not all give a consistent signal and I consider it dig-worthy if I get a steady left-right signal without it jumping all over the place on the dash. Silver dimes and small silver appears to come up only on one part of the old "X" sweep and I dig those as a matter of course now.

I'm just lucky too sometimes. That has a huge lot to do with it I guess. I dug this weird car ornament today and laughed when it popped up. A bull! LOL! No bull - okay. I think I better get some rest and lay off the caffeine.

Hope you all have some great hunts!! HH
