I found this lock in my friends backyard with the key still in it.  Detecting

Well WD-40 is not really a lubricating oil, although it will help break things apart.  In the long run you'll need a heavy lubricating oil to keep it functioning smooth.  WD-40 is more of a rust penetrator and water displacement oil.  It's main ingredients are hexane molecules, related to kerosene, which will eventually gum up if you try to use it as a lubrication oil.

Nice find on the lock though.  Now if you could just find the key to a lock that I have on one of my outbuildings that I can't find.

often where one finds rusty "old locks" --one can find old things worthy of being "kept under lock and key" for safe keeping -- that locks modern looking --- most likely your buddies  (so it might not hold as much meaning) but remember that tip .
