It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I'm sure you've looked on the Net. for an answer, and found that their are many variations. We do know that it is prior to the 1928 version. Yours has a variation I can't find in any of the books. It appear that Liberty has her left arm across her waist instead of resting on the shield. It may be just the angle or the shot, but that's what i see. Is there any other back marks under the crude? I think it falls in the Civil War era. Good find.  CWhunter

Thanks, Yes I did cover the net fer a few days. Even thought of buying the button book Allens I think? The button was dug a 8 inches and only lightly rinsed/soaked in warm water and soft brushed. I did not want to remove any crud on back that looked caked on. Only the word superior was visible. Any suggestions or further info on this would greatly be appreciated.

Cleaning buttons can be tricky. Not knowing the condition of yours,it looks solid, I have used Olive oil to remove light corrosion. With coins you can soak them in it for 20 minutes or so. but the acidity of the oil doesn't allow you to do that with a button. I use a Q-tip and coat the area with the oil and let it stand for a few minutes and then use a toothpick to remove any loosened crud or corrosion. Some people like to leave a coat of oil on their object, it does highlight the details, but i wipe off as much as possible. Like i said it loosens the corrosion,so i don't want to chance of ruining the piece. Hope this helps and it reveals more info. so you can I.D. your button. Could be rare  Undecided  lets hope.  go find more. Cwhunter

OK, Without removing the two pieces of metal in the loop and without bending the loop upright I ran warm water and a q tip across the crud and there appears to be more writing. It looks like a 2 or an S and L and T but cannot see it with the magnified glass unless I bend the loop upright which I do not want to do.
I will use olive oil tonight to see if I can get a better read on the letters.
Any suggestions about the loop and two pieces of fastening material would be appreciated. I much rather find someone who specializes in this than take the value away from the find.
I will post more picks after I use the oil and improve the image.

The button says "SUPERIOR QUALITY". I held it under sunlight and looked thru the mag glass!
No other markings.

OK, Spoke to the relic man Harry Ridgeway at

http://relicman.com/.

He was very helpful and had looked in Alberts and said that it was a odd button not easily matched with the stamp of (SUPERIOR QUALITY)  and that face. It could be older or maybe a transitional button the maker did not specify the exact years they began using the stamp on the back, It appears to be an Alberts 11 if that means anything? The picture quality in Alberts is fuzzy due to the resolution of dot matrix printing. Any who he said it was a rare find or scarce if that.
so I am happy to learn something about the button!
