Hello everyone no coins to report, but did find a lot more railroad items from the 1800s.
I must say it was really hot out digging today well over 95 in the shade. You can imagine what we looked like after today. We received permission to hunt on a 40 acre farm today which i have been trying to get for 2 months, it is right in line with a train line that we have been tracking and although they have a lot of bulls on the farm we will be starting there wed morning.

Hey, captnbad, those old railroad areas are always worth an oddity or two, aren't they?   The wife and I spend a lot of our time hunting the old lines.

Yes they do,I started this one when i was walking through the woods one day about three months ago, my wife tripped on a horseshoe and i started looking there and haven't stopped yet. The line I am on now should take me to Cedar Key although right now I am about 30 miles away and will be digging for quite some time here.

I liked what you showed in the pics. Very neat finds. Keep us posted with more finds. You will definitely come across with some old tokens or coins as well. Are you planning to clean the pieces? If so, how?

I recently found the pieces attached, and have no idea what they are. They are both heavy. The biggest one is about 8.5" long and about 3.75" wide. The smaller one is about 6 x 2.5" Any ideas? I doubt they are related to train tracks for I found them in a picnic grove in the woods, but who knows.

I'm sure the larger of the two is a Wood Splitting Wedge.   See the Peened end?

The other looks like some blade from something. Cool

Thanks Homefire. I found a picture of the steel splitting wedge online! How cool! That one splitted many, many logs it seems. I wonder how old it could be? Both things, although not together, were about 16-18" deep. I also wonder what the other piece might be?

Yep your right, here is a picture of  the one I pulled up a week ago on the same site as the rail. I have found a logging site on 40 acres here in Florida that has led me to  what i believe is 30 miles of lost Florida line from the 1800s.

Cool!  Cool. The wedge splitter you found is similar to mine, so I may have an idea that the one I found is from the 1800s as well. Keep looking and posting your finds. Yours is a great adventure.  Great I wonder how many more goodies you'll come across with.

There is an old park here in Chicago through which a train passed in the past. All the tracks were removed and only the pathway remains. I feel like hunting around to see if I can find leftovers from that time. I can imagine people and children throwing things from the train to the woods.  Smiley I'll take a picture as well for the pathway is rather long as expected. Actually, there are quite a few abandoned train tracks and pathways here. HH

That second blade looking thing I'm thinking could be a Debarking Blade.

Rail carried tons of Log Wood , Timber.  Think about it.

You may wish to check out simple Electrolysis.

Cleans up Iron and Steel items good if done right.

From one of these?

so I may have an idea that the one I found is from the 1800s as well.

Careful about jumping to that conclusion.   wedge splitters are something that really haven't changed much over the years.  Like a good ax, there are only a few ways you can change the form and still meet the function with maximum efficiency.
