I will add a magnet to my bag of goodies that I have with me - shovels, etc.  Thanks for the info.  I have to admit, I had driven into town today after this morning's hunting and I was wishing I had left the detector in the car as I was thinking of all the great places I could use it.  I can't wait to get up to Parlee Beach next weekend - a sandy (not rocky) long beach that I grew up going to every summer.  My parents have owned a cottage there just above the private section since the 70's.

as suggested a magnet would be a good thing to carry, if it detects and the magnet sticks its worth picking up. meteorites dont look like some imagine and a fusion crust is smooth sometimes glassy. post a pic first so we can get some other opinions. alot of universities are able to run the tests, they are looking for a nickle content with the iron. not all meteorites contain iron but most do.

Heres a hint in pinpointing.   Find a spot on your livingroom floor with your detedtor that has no beeps. Then randomly throw a few diffrent items onto the carpet i.e. coins, rings etc. cover them with a blanket and try to pinpoint them and be able to tell what it is and notice where it is under the coil. Remember to know what you throw down as you dont want the vacuum cleaner to find it!  good luck Victory

I did something similar to the blanket thing, but I did it out side and used newspaper and a screwdriver. Since you have a little one who seems to like to help out get him to place several different objects under several sheets of news paper, locate them then stick the screwdriver through the paper and see how close you are. Use the X-ing method and it should help. Use different objects and it will help with your ID-ing also. Hope this helps.

Congrats on the finds! I'm sure it won't be long until you're out there again in your backyard. Just the thought of not knowing what may be buried in your own yard and the overwhelming curiosity will probably get to you sooner than you think. 100 years is a long time. Could be some really cool things just waiting for your shovel! Let us know what you find!!!!!!!!!!
