I am happy that you are enjoying the hobby Sonya. Like you, I am from Canada (Southern Ontario)

I have to make up for the cold winters and snow and get out as much as I can in the summer. Since I retired, I get out about 4 or 5 hours a day.

It is a very addictive hobby.

A pin pointer can help. I have a few. A Bounty Hunter, a Garrett Pro Pointer and an In Line Sun Ray. (I love this one on my MXT)

Wishing you the best of happy hunting.

Mike

As a new detectorist, (I've not even received my detector yet, but it is on the way to me) I love the suggestion of practicing on the carpet or lawn, covered by newspaper and 'pinpoint' target with a small screwdriver to gain knowledge and practice to be more efficient even on my 'first expedition'.

Just be sure you do not pick up nails (detect them) from under the carpet or pick up any electrical noise from wires in your home.

What kind of detector are you getting?

Good luck.

My budget allowance is pretty slim, but found a Garrett ACE 150 to start with.  If I find I am making some nice finds, I can hopefully upgrade a bit later on.  I am also starting with a Harbor Freight pin pointer.  Perhaps these are not the best of either, but from my research, felt they were good enough to start with.

Part of my main reason for doing this is that I am a senior that needs to get outside and do some walking.  Hopefully I will make some nice little finds, both here on the local farm lands (with permission, of course) and at the nearby beach.

And yes, aware of checking for nails under carpet, too.
I also plan on using the detector to find the nails in my dirt driveway that my tires seem to find so easily!

I am retired as well. It is a great hobby for keeping in shape.

The 150 is a fine machine. You made a good choice. Made in the good old USA and they are great on their service.

Wishing you well my friend,

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks Mike,  good to hear I have not chosen a dud to start off with.  After this one has 'paid for it's self in finds, I do hope to upgrade, perhaps to the Garrett ACE 250.  Not totally sure yet, but I do like/prefer the read out screen on  the Garrett's rather than a 'scale meter' that I may find confusing.

Here's hoping each of your finds are better than the last.

While waiting for arrival I am web searching a lot of the how to's, laws, and suggestions for best places to hunt.  I am hoping to find a lot of civil war relics along with coins and of course rings and such.  And I am fortunate enough to be living in the "Heart of Dixie" to find such items.

Comgrats on the first find. I use a pin pointer i bought at Harbor Freight for 14.95 , it works great for the price. Takes a 9V battery and has a sensitivity setting, i use it a lot to pinpoint coins in the digs so i dont damage them. Check your yard out hunt slow take your time and you should come up with some more good finds. Good luck and happy hunting!!! DW

I just looked on line to see about the cen-tech pin pointer - unfortunately the furthest I get into the States is Maine and there are no Harbor Freights in that State.  Would anyone in this group be willing to send me one if I send a money order to reimburse for purchase and delivery to me in Nova Scotia Canada?
