Go Up Go Down

I went to a plot of land by by house that is just starting to be developed. It belongs to a church they have just removed all the brush and started leveling so I thought it would be a good time to talk to the pastor and ask if I could metal detect there. He gave me his blessing and I did some detecting. After many nails pop cans pull tabs and all matter of other metal debris I found 2 gold looking coins. They have a date of 1701. I was very excited at first but on closer inspection the edges of the coins have markings where they were cut, and they stick to a magnet. Now unless the properties of gold have changed since the last time I took a chemistry class, gold is not magnetic. These 2 coins were about 6 inches down and about 5 feet apart. These must just be replicas or just fakes someone threw out and they happened to get buried during the dozing process. I know they are fake but I have no idea where they come from or why they were there.
Can anyone Identify these coins?
Let me know what you think.
Thanks
BW

check your local telephone listing for a Numismatics Society listing, and see if they can help you.
you would be surprised at the amount of information these folks can come up with.

For those that don't know = Numismatics is the study or collection of currency, including coins, tokens, paper money, and related objects

Just taking a stab, if they are magnetic they could replicas of Spanish coinage.  The obverse says "Phillp the 5th Grace of God" and on the reverse "King of Spain."  The edge on pic looks like it was punched.  They could also be "gennys" punched out in the new world and made of a rather soft metal that has some magnetic properties.

You need to see someone who speaks coins.

Replica or original, they could be iron coins with some type of coating to prevent corrosion. But a numismatic can tell you better. Good luck and great finds  Great
