Someone suggested this could be a Milling Ball. That makes since as I do live in the Southern end of the Mother Lode.  Shocked It's certainly my most interesting find to date.

I agree with CC, but if you grind thru the rust to the metal and get a dull red spark it probably is a cast iron ball mill ball.

If there was any military action in the area, it could be grapeshot.

The word grapeshot did not refer to the size of the ball; grapeshot could be much larger, depending on the size of the gun firing it. Grapeshot refers to the way in which the iron balls were packaged in bunches resembling clusters of grapes.
