That cartridge...could it be a 7mm? My father gave me a carbine rifle that uses ammo like the  pic shows, and its hard to tell  the condition the find is...exactly what it is???  Oh, and thanks for the bugs pics.  With a magnifying glass, can you see anything at all on the bottom at all?

sorry for my english but you're right, it is a cartridge, not the bullet Smiley

So...at the bottom of this cartrdige I guess 3 different numbers and a letter :

                  S
           315    16
                 36

{alt}

The coin:

{alt}

And thanks for your advice, I 'm not really confident in handling such item : this will end in a box in my garage.

Rub of the bottom of the Cartridge a bit. LOL!  It's NOT going to go BOOM.    I see 16 38 something ,that would be the week and year made.  The letter or letters is the Manufacturer.

Hi,

as I said, I'm not confident with ammos, but I rubbed the bottom with a little sandpaper.

Now the inscription is quite clear:

                 S*
          P315    16
                 36

Glad someone knows their ammo. I was reading though this one with interest and going to say "there is no Rim, so can't be 303", however you beat me to it and well done.

For the record most riffle rounds are tapered.

To me it looks German, however you should be able to take some measurements which would help a lot. If you have some verniers you could measure the bullet diameter and if its 7 or 8x57mm its German. If its 7.62mm its US/30-06 however I don't think it looks long enough for that. If its 7.62 x 39mm in length its a Russian AK47 round (which was actually developed by the German and stollen by the Russian's), however I don't think this looks that short.

My money is on it being a German 8mm Mauser round, although the S could signify that it comes from the Springfield armoury making it a US round.

I also agree its not going to just go off (boom) with general handling.

There are no doubt lots more interesting things to be found in your forrest, just watch out for un-exploded bombs. I have seen some stuff on You-Tube where guys are digging and bashing away with picks for un-fired artillery shells. Crazy stuff.....
