NATO equivanlent of 30-06  would be 7.62X51  Don't think the Germans was using that.   Huh??

  S*       Don't know  still looking

P315   P315 Märkisches Walzwerk G.m.b.H., Strausberg bez. Potsdam, Germany

   16       Week Made

   36       Year made

A 7.62x51mm Nato is what we know and refer to now as a 308 Winchester (developed in the 50's) a 30-06 is over 63mm in length.

And your right that the German's were not using either of those.

Yep now I think your on the money.

Just been looking some things up and the S could stand for a number of things in German.

The letter "S"could stand for Spitzgeschoß ("pointed bullet"), and the English word "spitzer" for that style of bullet is derived from this German term.

Also I found other references to it maybe being an armour piercing and maybe even incendiary round (all German).

Half asleep and very tired as its after 3am however can't sleep as wife is snoring her head off....  Angry

That's what we was talking about.   Your Cartreadge has a S* on it and we think that's the Armer Percing round there talking about.

The one shown in that link.

Don't do any more cleaning on it.   Please show a photo of it after you hit it with sand paper.

Do you have a product called WD-40 there?

You need to measure the cartridge case length not the overall cartridge length. Bullet length is directly relative to its weight given it can only increase in size length ways and its impossible to know the bullet seating depth without pulling it apart, so measurements are taken on the case length. I would avoid any attempt to pull this cartridge apart, which is normally done with a connettic energy puller. There is a possibility that this bullet was designed to explode with a charge of mostly black powder. If I were considering doing this I would only use a die based bullet puller, but you should seek professional help with this in your local area ie, a qualified gunsmith.
7.9 is consistant with it being an 8mm Mauser and I think you will find the case length is 57mm.
Is it the bullet or the case that is rusty, most likely to case.

There are a number of possibilities as to the type of round it is and I will try and look up some of my reference books latter as I have just gotten home from work.

The case is the brass part that is left behind after the bullet has separated gone on its merry way. In your example its the measurement that is 56.83mm

Looking at the condition of the bullet I would say its a badly corroded armour piercing round.
