Go Up Go Down

Today I found this 1917 Mercury Dime that seems to have been submerged in a lake or a river for many years and got a heavy coat of green algae that eventually dried out. There was a small park lake in the past where I found it. Does anyone have an idea on how to remove the algae coat? I can't even see the minmark on the back, if it has one.

That is my 4th and the oldest so far. I was told to clean it with electrolysis, but not sure the green stuff is corrosion. I think the coat is just dried green algae from being in a lake for many years.

Hey, I saw the silver bar you found. Very nice job man!

If that's true, look for an acid that will not harm silver but will attack vegetation. Vinegar (weak ascetic acid) or carbolic acid (soda water) both come to mind as agents for this.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I have thought about vinegar or pure lemon juice, but I must be certain about the source of the green coat. I'll undust my microscope this weekend and take a look at the coin. If it is algae, as I suspect, I'll try a weak acid on it. Thanks GD!  Wink

I bought a microscope less than a year ago and love it.  I got it for checking out stool samples of my dogs since I have been breeding a couple of pairs.  Bugs like coccidia (sp?)s are easy to spot after a little experience.  Worm eggs are easy to spot as well and it does not make sense for me to pay for vet visits due to simple issues.

I start with a paste of baking soda and water. Put in the palm of one hand and rub the coin gently with your finger. Silver will clean up real nice. Note>> it will take off any "antique patina".
