Chip, Ok here goes... The button is inscribed (Diegesm Forte)=dieGesM' Forte which is old German and doesn't translate to English. As I gathered from my net search dieGesM' meant something like "No Fear" does today?Huh??, except it was applied to spirits not people. Forte is strong. So we have 'strong no fear'. The other explanation, and more likely the correct one. Diegesm Forte is a name. You know like Robert Young. This is as far as I can go. Anyone what to show up my ignorance feel free to.

Either of Gambol's answers would be a good one.   I tend to lean to the inscription being a personal or a family motto in which case it would be something like "Strength through Fearlessness", or "In Strength there is No Fear" --- in large part because I've never stumbled across a name like Diegesm  Smiley   ---- but I have stumbled across lots of mottos similar to what Diegesm Forte would translate to (and it's not unusual to use an archaic version of a language for such mottos).

Hey Idaho
You may be correct. I truly have no idea. I am going to take it to a couple of antique dealers in the area and check it out
Thanks for the input

Hey Chip, this might help you with your button. E-mail a pcture to Roger@GoldenAgeButtons.co.uk  I did it for a button I found and he replied right back to me exactly what is was, where it came from and what it was used for. This Roger was really helpful. Hope this helps. neat finds
