Go Up Go Down

I have a bounty hunter Land Star and went out for the first time on Friday for 2 hours and found a bunch of junk and twelve cents at a park.  I am hooked.....I want to start checking the beaches at the lakes nearby.  Could anyone recommend tools or accessories I need.  I looked at the sand scoopers but some of them run up to $60.00.  Any feedback would be great.

Hi coolade21! Greetings from another Minnesotan!
Look at woodwizard's post in the beginners section on digging tools. He made a great scoop for about $9.00! I'm going to try and make one for the sand.
What part of Minnesota are you from?

I am from Chaska.  I went out for my second time last night and found 2 quarters, a dime and 6 pennies along with a bunch of pulltabs and a pop can.  Thanks for the digging information.  After using my bounty hunter digger last night, I realized that I probably should purchase a new one that is a little larger.

Not bad for your first few times out!
You can make a home made scoop from pvc that will be pretty inexpensive. I second Tylers recommendation for a pinpointer. I've been doing this a long time without one, mostly because none of the ones on the market got me excited. Either they were too big and bulky, or appeared cheaply made. I just got a Garrett Propointer in March and wished they made these years ago. It's light, water resistant, built like a tank, and runs forever on one 9 volt. I'm still on the original battery.

Diggers come in all shapes and sizes, and you can get a Wilcox  for little cash. Mine is around 15 years old and I still use it. I also have a Lesche which I use in the woods because it's almost impossible to wreck. That cost close to 40.00, but it'll last forever.

Good Luck and have fun in this great, thought consuming hobby!
Mike

Now I am pretty new, do you use the pinpointer mostly for land or beaches or both.  Do you use your metal detector and then use your pinpointer to find the exact location of the item?

I use the detector to locate, then dig a plug, then use my pinpointer. The pinpointer really makes the recovery time fast! I got the Garrett Propointer a couple months ago and I love it! I also use just a metal garden trowel from Target, about $3.00. Gotta tell you, I'm hooked on this hobby, just started in April.
I'm from Cottage Grove, lot's of areas to search!  I hit White Bear Lake a few weeks ago, there is soooo much beach now, the water is way down! I imagine Minnetonka is the same way.
