yes this is wonderful numismatia...I believe the stones may be much more valuable than the gold, although the entire piece is very collectible to those who can afford to acquire and keep such things...there are quite a few people who do collect this type of jewelry, especially in europe...do not let this go too cheaply, if at all!  The stones appear to be high grade garnets, but there is a good chance the cutting was done with very primitive technology, hand lapped perhaps, and these old style faceted cuts are sometimes worth much more just because they exhibit certain technique that is now rare.  Beautiful, good luc and may you find many more as nice as this, or better!

One more aspect of a treasure like this which I wanted to mention:  if you can nail down the maker it could increase the value many times.  It may have a makers mark.  i once tried to sell a fancy glass bowl, small thing, for a lady on ebay, listed as cut glass bowl.  Started at usd5.00, after a week, no bids.  I ended up acquiring the thing from the lady because I liked it.  It took me many hours to find it was an Orrefors Ice by Vic Lindstrom, signed, dated 1942, handmade piece, very nice, put it back on ebay and listed it with that info, it went to 267.50 and the person was very glad to receive such a deal!
