I found this fork in a small shell midden on a beach in Cape Town.
I have been trying to identify the hallmark but have had no luck and it's driving me crazy.I had a mate of mine look it up in a book that he uses but no luck.
He suggested it may be of American origin.
The markings are GW (inside a heart shape) then M(square) then o?(square) and then s(in a diamond)
I would appreciate any help.

Nice Fork, not sure if this will help or not but look up "Nevada Silver Vintage Forks" in google, the shape looks like the one you found. Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback so far. So you see.....it's enough to drive you nuts. Still no ideas as to what the origin of this fork is. So if it is so difficult to find the hallmark on the available data bases, could this mean that it is actually quite a rare item ?
What I have seen is that the letter S in a diamond seems to indicate the year 1857.  Angry
