Here are some items I've found over the past few days. The cap pistol is made of cast iron. I recall seeing one made of cast iron when I was a kid. This one is missing the trigger and trigger guard. I will go back and look for it when I get a chance. Once I put it back together I'll give it to a friend who collects antique toys. Notice there are two sizes of railroad spikes. the small one came from the Orange Belt Railway, a narrow gauge railway that went away in 1854.

I'm going to Clearwater Beach tomorrow. The spring break is in full swing and I'm hoping for some good finds. Gambol.

Bluenoser me buoy, I learned about date nails from my own back yard, I was getting rid of some decaying railway sleepers and replacing them with pressure treated wood when I saw some round headed nails with a number on them, my buddy told me they were date nails used by the railways, they are from the 1930s .............HH....Johnnn

Actually, the numbers on them usually represent the date. So one with 12 on it is going to be from 1912 while one that says 37 will be from 1937. If you get one with a single digit there is a good chance it is from the first decade of the last century. It is pretty rare to find one that was placed after the early 1970's. Around here, if we're anywhere near a railroad chances are at least one of the guys will dig up one. By the way, they were used with other timber structures also, including mines.

Hi BA, thats interesting and a good way to tell the age of the wood, these ones I found I pulled out with my fingers as the wood was so rotten.
