Go Up Go Down

Went on a salvage dive at a burned out tavern/liquor store that was open for over 80 years before a fire last year.  Got enough scrap copper, brass, aluminum, and steel to fill the van, and netted $100 at the scrapyard for 3.5 hrs digging.  Bonus find was this cool old sign that hung outside the building in the late 40's and early 50's.  Somehow, it survived the fire and the water damage.

Took some of the cash I earned and hit up a local thrift store.  Found this Delft mug for 75 cents, and a complete set of lapis lazuli jewelry, set in .950 silver for $3.55.  Went to the manufacturers website, and they retail the set for $351.05.  Nice little 10,000% ROI.

Thanks guys.  Hung the sign on my front porch, sold the mug for 6 bucks at a consignment store, and putting the jewelry on ebay tonight.  Gonna post my brass finds from yesterday later.

Hi Ekstar,

I've been doing some hunting around a building in my area that burned down a long time ago -- some of the metals onsite are melted into flat sheets and clumps -- do you have any time on how to recognize certain metals?

What a great trade off there.  That jewelry is pretty too.

If the metal is melted into "flat sheets and clumps"  its only value is as scrap (unless you have a smelter in your back yard  Wink ).  First, get a $3 magnet at the local hardware store.  Anything the magnet sticks to contains steel, worth about 11cents a pound here in the states.  the non-magnetic stuff, if it is in sheets, is most likely aluminum siding or shelving, 33 cents a pound.  Now the clumps, I'm guessing, were small objects made of metal, so the non-magnetic stuff will be aluminum, 18-8 stainless steel, brass, or copper.  Sorry, but unless it was a jewelry shop or a rich person's house, the odds of finding melted gold or silver are pretty small.  melted coins or jewelry, if there, will have melted into small nuggets.

To determine whether the clumps contain any copper, scrape the surface with a file or disc grinder.  the underlying metal will be reddish brown for copper, yellow for brass, and silver for stainless or nickel.  Value will depend on the percentage of copper in each piece, but brass is typically 2/3 the price of pure copper, and stainless and nickel are typically 85% higher than plain steel.

The local scrapyard will identify what everything is for you, if you just want to haul it all down there.  If you have any other questions, send me a pm.

Rick
