Along with $3.00 in cland and a few bottle caps I found what looks like a dart (or bomb). It's 3 inches long and there;s threading under the head and weighs just under an ounce. Any ideas what it is?

That is a cap dart.  They were very popular in the 1950's and '60's.  Inside the head was a little spring loaded plate that fit against the head.  You would pull the plate back and insert an individual cap (or two or three if you wanted a bigger bang).  The spring and the plate would hold the cap in place. Then, standing on a hard surface you would throw it up in the air.  The head was heaviest so it would come down first.  The impact would pop the cap.   They were great fun!  If you put too many caps in it the impact would be cushioned too much and the cap(s) wouldn't pop!     Great memories!    Wise

Yep!   As a mater of fact I seen one of those for sale in the Dollar store not long ago.   Brought back some memories for sure.

I would have thought they were banned by know.    Some kid Bonking another on the head or something stupid.

I don't think "Homeland Security" has reached quite that deep yet!  But I wouldn't be surprised if they're working their way there!            Detecting

This one's all metal. I think when I was a kid the tail was plastic. Found this one 3 inches down in a park

Great You guys were right. I got all the gunk out of it and the spring and head are loose. I'm tempted to buy some caps and try it out. I guess I'm just a big 52 y.o. kid

That's okay Frazdad!  I'm a 65 year-old kid...   and I still haven't decided what I want to do when I grow up!   Shocked
