Very Nice coin......Isn't that date around the same time as the ships lost around Florida in what was known as the PLATE FLEET?

Paul A;

Your description of the state of the coin sounds like it was part of a shipwreck and was washed ashore by a storm... not uncommon.

For silver coins, try an aluminum plate or zinc plate and a solution of a ounce of washing soda, dissolved in a pint of hot water... just place the coin on the plate and cover with the solution... even after you use the vinegar to dissolve calcium/magnesium concretions. It takes a while so patience is good, better than abrasives. Its called electrolysis, even though there is no battery.

That coin looks like it has never been circulated other than on the ocean bottom. I can even READ the enscription and make sense of it!

If it was me, I would go back there after every big storm!

Went to the coast yesterday it being Easter and all.
Not going to reveal exactly where, lets just say "the west country" here in the u.k.
Had permission to search on a private bit of beach.
Didn't find a lot for an hour or two, only a few pounds in modern currency.
I then concentrated my searching around an area of rocks.
After quite a while of finding nothing but bits of copper and iron I got a huge signal from the minelab.
It was coming from a gap about an inch wide between a couple of pretty hefty rocks.
I used the "probe" i'd built to locate it exactly and tried to recover it.
It took about an hour to get out with the help of a pretty hefty pry bar to seperate the rocks.
Out came a very blackened large coin shape!
I've now cleaned it up a bit...... and it's in great condition!

Hi Paul

Nice find,
Non Portrait 8 Reale. Looks in really good condition.
Was it found above or below the high water mark?
By the sounds of it, it was washed ashore and would be below the high water mark..
If it was found below the high water mark, it belongs to the Queen. Cry[ROW]

Regards
Bob [Sabie]

Looks to be a Mexico City minted Pillar  - could have been washed up from the Hollandia wreck June 1743 - of course, would depend on how close your find is to the Scilly Isles/Lands End.

There was quite a lot of trade between Bristol and Spain in the 18th.C.

Bristol was a major port in those days and was a centre for wines and sherry/Jerez from Southern Spain. So what looks very strange at the outset, a Spanish expensive coin found in the UK dated 1740, isn't so unbelievable as first thought.
