Hi  Sue , you can see the imperfection of the item. This is one of my greatest find in the treasure hunting adventure.

Hi Paul
Though you've been missing for a few days ,  So thats where you got to .
Hey thats a terriffic find and it looks in very good condition . Clapp  do you mind telling me ? did you take that photo with a camera and what lighting and setting did you use ?  the reason I'm asking is because I've been trying to guide a few people about the quality of their photos .   one fellow tried to scan it on his scanner with no success ,I think he thought I was trying to run him down when I suggested he use macro on his camera setting and a desklight not the flash to light the coin .  Is this how you did yours ?

Thanks for sharing! Great find - I think so, too. Neat that you found a pair. I'm smiling at your generosity - shows you have a good character, though, to give it away. Too bad your great find was a female item - my best find is a ring and it's made for a man. Maybe our next great finds will be something we can wear. I was hoping you'd show the bangles - thanks! Enjoyed looking at them. Sue

Hi,
The coin didn't come up from the sand like that!
It was covered in some kind of dark coloured "concretion" (plus a couple of barnacles!).
I guess that was what was protecting it to a large degree.
I soaked it in vinegar for a good few hours which softened up/dissolved the concretion.
Then finished it off by polishing slightly with aluminium kitchen foil (works great on silver).
Aussie, I took the photos with the digicam on my phone!
It's a nokia n95 with the 5 megapixel camera.
Set it to macro with the flash off, lighting was natural light from a window.

There you go Paul .

That worked out well that shot .  Maybe you should do a new post on "How to get the best out of your camera"   when shooting closeups of your coins . Might help a few newcommers with their photo shoot , especially their closeups.     I've taken some of my bottle collection but the files are to big to post so I'll have to shrink them from a Jpeg to a Giff or something .  Great

Paul . Nice find you have there . Did you think any further on this wonderfull find ?  The place you found the coin is a little unusual . How did it get there ? Wave action could have something to do with it , or a Spaniard could have lost it . In both cases there must have been a source for this coin . An Englishmen certainly , or most likely  , would not have had a Spanish coin . And even if he had a coin what would he be doing there and where did he come from . Now it also could be that there was a wreck close inshore . I think it takes a little more and closer research . You may be sitting on a nice find there . If you want me to do some research on a possible wreck , let me know . First of all we have to get the date of the coin . I did not look that close at the picture but I will do that right now . I do have a Danish salvage crew that would be more than interested in working with you should a closer research point to a wreck-site . Just don't let this possibility go to waste .  Regards  Cornelius

OK Paul  the date is ( as you probably know )  1740  . Philips  V   of Spain .  These are the first parts of the puzzle . So , if it is a wreck it should have stranded  after 1740 .   I don't believe that a guy just walked the beach and lost this coin .  Do you want to go on with this ?   Cornelius

Paul
Australia was'nt even discovered then ! officially, although we think the Portuguese might have sailed down our West Coast but they got shipwrecked there ,we know that because they nailed a pewter plate on a tree .  so we have no chance of even finding anything that dates much before 1770 .   I'de be delighted to find a coin like that here .
