However, the pin is from the REPUBLIC of China (no "People's" as part of the name). These are what were known to as older folks as the "Free Chinese" as opposed to the "Red Chinese" , or the "Chicoms" (derogatory terms for which I must apologize but which are used ONLY for clarification regarding the two "countries"). The Republic of China is the Nationalist Chinese hold-out more commonly known as Taiwan (or possibly Formosa if you are as old as GD).

The US has nearly gone to war with the PRC several times over Taiwan. Until 1971, it was the Republic of China (Taiwan) and not the People's Republic of China (mainland/Communist China) that held the Chinese seat in the UN, including the permanent seat on the Security Council. They have been trying to get re-admitted to the United Nations since 1992.
