Thanks Outback, cyberborikua, Leslie, and Williamsingr for the comments.  Much appreciated.

Williamsingr:

This short sword was recovered in a private yard in NW Ohio that was being hunted with landowner permission.  Although there does not seem to b e much rust or corrosion on the sword it is present on it and it was indeed a buried target recovered with a Minelab E-TRAC metal detector.    As far as an age or anything like that your guess is as good as mine.  Based on what I know of swords which I am no expert by any means I believe the material of the blade is not of a weapons grade and the etching or engraving on the blade would indicate that it is most likely a ceremonial or decorative piece.

The important thing to me is that this is like you said a most unusual or unique find.  It is a find that I will remember for the rest of my days and it was an interesting story, in my opinion.  The sword also looks great in the display case that I have it in. Great Great Great

Nice find Stringfrenzy. Grats on the win. Keep up the good work. If it is not too much trouble, would you post your photo of it in it's display case?

That is truly a find of a life time glad you shared it with all of us. Have you thought about perhaps carbon dating it ? The area you found it in was one of the bloodiest battle grounds for hundreds of years going back to the 1500's. Have you  considered going back to the site and searching more ? If an Indian raiding party took it off someone they would have thrown it away as it had no use to them so there may be other finds yet there. Any gold or silver coins they would have also buried and could be close by. There was one battle I read about between the French and British in the area and the British lost and were allowed to leave but as they left the battle field somewhere along the way the natives attacked and slaughterd all the British. There were also many other battles in the area as the dominating forces launched campaign after campaign against the Native Americans and not until the late 1700,s did the Americans finally beat the Natives and take the land under General Wayne.

Flower of the Sea

It may take a few days for me to get to it but I'll see what I can do about the pic.

Williamsingr

No, I haven't really though about carbon dating or anything like that.  I have thought about going back to the general area to do some more looking around as you never know what may come up.

You are correct on the history of the area.  A number of fierce and bloody battles for sure.

Just a thought if that spot is anywhere close to a river you want to check the banks for anything discarded there by Natives back then.

I have checked along areas of river in other spots but have found nothing to speak of.  I do keep looking though.

Is it a standard sword or a three sided blade?

Looks like any standard sword blade to me.  Not quite sure but if you mean three sided as in a triangular or pyramid shaped blade then yes it's standard blade.
