nice mortise lock.....but I don't see anything that would help identify the manufacturer and date.   I know they were used for a number of years (and actually pulled a couple out of my grandfather's garage when I cleaned it out)

yeah, this has some type of writing on it, but I'll have to put it under a magnifying glass to make it out.  i should have taken a picture, the keyhole was the only thing that could be seen sticking out of the ground, as if you could stick in a key and the ground would open up.  the homestead i was working has been used by five different families for over a hundred and something years, and now is completely abandoned.  i stopped by the cabin of a gentleman and expressed my appreciation for history and he and told me i could dig up that entire homestead and find whatever i can because they're about to develop it, so he'd rather me find what i can while i can than for it to be lost to a new neighborhood.

I did a little digging on these Mortise locks like Bitburg mentioned.. from the Wikipedia website, it says this "Some of the most common manufacturers of mortise locks in the United States are Arrow, Baldwin, Best, Corbin Russwin, Emtek, Falcon, Schlage, and Sargent." So, if you happen to find one of these names on it then perhaps that may help you identify what company made it. I'm guessing it was probably an American company.
Hope that helps.

Find the maker, and I might be able to find a key that works (I saved a whole lot of old keys from my Grandpa's place).    Smiley

Another idea - you could possibly try is the extra-fine steel wool, it cleans out a lot of that rust.. I've had pretty good success with cleaning up rusty items such as that with it.. don't over-do it though cause you don't want to scrape off the words/lettering that is on it.
