I found this coin back in the summer in a school playground, was wondering if anyone might have any info. this type. Not sure if it's a token, collector coin or what.

The front side has written across the top San Francisco Mint
on the bottom the dates 1874-1937

reverse side has a map of the United States with an eagle with scales in his beak
across the top Treasury department
bottom has United States of America.

Pics aren't the greatest, the wife's new camera, haven't figured out the macros settings yet.

I put the pic with the penny in for a size reference.

It looks like a fair token from an international fair to me. In the US in 1937 there were three international fairs. There was the Great Lakes Exhibition in Cleveland, the Greater Texas and Pan American Exhibition and the Pan American Fair in Miami. Any or all of them might have had the tokens for distribution. The San Francisco Mint issued them some of the major fairs. Like all organizations, it was always trying to drum up business to mint coins for other countries. I'm sure one of our San Francisco residents can shed more light on the item if they swing by the museum and ask.

Or, you could contact them.

You're welcome. If you found it in SC, it didn't travel that far if it came from Miami.

GoldDigger definitely has you on the right track, although the "token" may or may not be from an international fair since the San Francisco Mint also sold these in their gift shop.   The building on the obverse was the US Mint in San Francisco between 1874 and 1937.  The Old Mint was open to visitors until 1993.   Since 2003, the building has belong to the city of San Francisco which is turning it in to a museum.    So, if the commemorative medal didn't come from an international fair, it was probably purchased at the Old Mint gift shop.
