Go Up Go Down

I have about a 3 acre field between my house and a school thats owned by a hospital thats about 900 yards away. Ive had exclusive rights to detect all the hospital property for over a year now (new road, new housing development that I live in). It sits on the outskirts of town. I go detect part of this nicely mowed "field" now and then when I dont have much time, and want to walk to my dig site. I get frustrated by the huge amount of trash in it and its harder digging than my other sites. The kids use it for soccer, football, baseball, etc... so I usually go first thing in the morning at sunrise for a couple hours. I went this morning, and my first hole was a torn up pop can, second hole registered like 2 pull tabs in the same hole bouncing between 30-42 on each target at about an inch or 2 apart (yes with the F2 and 8 inch coil, you can tell if you pay attention and check your targets thoroughly before you dig, you can even "see" the tail on an old pull tab with it). I moved  around the target slowly but was intrigued by the sound I was getting compared to aluminum so I dug it fast and rough like it was a trash again lol. checked my hole at around 6-7 inches and only had one target  so checked my pile with the pinpointer and found the first ear ring (with the clasp on it!) cheked the hole and found the next one WITH THE CLASP ON IT!! There was a tattered piece of material in the hole (a cloth bag? a hankerchief? anyway it was half disintegrated. Needless to say I marked the spot with a  mostly buried rock about 6" in diameter after doing a thorough search around a 20' radius of it! I'm going back and dig deeeper with my 4" coil so I can stick it in the hole to check for anything else. first pic is uncleaned at all, then after a light scrub with dawn dish soap and hot water with a soft toothbrushing. Looking at them under an eyepiece I can see 925 on both clasps and a symbol on the ring itself on both, but I cant make it out. I know its silver, but I highly doubt their real, too big and too perfect under an eyepiece, they are some honkers! check out the penny for size comparison. But anyway it sure was fun finding them!!!!! Gottem soaking now, I'l take them to a jeweler monday. Who wants to get their BLING ON! lol   FunnyDetecting

A couple of at home tests I learned are to breathe on it and see if it stays fogged up for more than a second or two.
Look at the edges (outer ring) of the facets for roughness (diamond) or smooth (other)
You could also try scratching it with quartz. Smiley

.925 is used for other precious metals too.

Citrine and Topaz holds more value then used Diamonds.

LOL! Try selling a Used Diamond!

I'll probably endup putting them on craiglist for $20? wait!.........I'll give them to Homefire to wear!! I'll mailem your way if you pierce your ears buddy lol. Just a joke, I better say that until  you all learn my whacked out sense of  humor.......I'm still waiting to be able to tell someone here they do their best work on their knees!  Cheesy

Two things for you here. First, don't you believe for a minute that diamonds have no resale value. The modern cut diamonds have a huge resale value. Those faceted before 1980 are mediocre in resale value but they are often sought after if they are big enough. Ask a jeweler. Don't take my word for it.

Second, as has been mentioned, other metals also use .925, particularly in the early 20th century when hallmarking became popular.

Your stones cannot be tested using folk methods. Even quartz will cut glass. In fact, take a plastic scouring pad to a glass window and look at the scratches you make with it. The advice again is to take them to a reputable jeweler or a gemologist. Nothing else will do for 100% certainty.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Yes, you just never know, unless you have the tools to test properly.  I agree with the others,
find a good jeweler to testing, even work out a deal to barter some testing for some goodies.
Or better yet, get one hooked on Detecting and you could get all your testing for free  Huh?
A very nice set of pretties, for sure.  HH  Robroy59

thanks and yes, already got a jeweler that will do it for free using that diamond machine on them. Might take them tomorrow, I cant stop thinking of maybe......just maybe they might be real. I know the older diamonds are much cleaner looking than what we see today, there's not much yellow in them at all......... but I dont know much about rocks, I can usually guess the carat of gold when I see it though
