Go Up Go Down

With a lack of time and energy yesterday after work, I decided to hit my "training beach" below the house.  This beach doesn't get high numbers of people and is mixture of shell, pebbles, some sand and lots of rusty metal bits, bronze strips, lead etc.

One of the first coins I dug up was a 1978 US Quarter which I put in the "not so common" class as I have found quite a few overseas coins so far.  But an hour later on the other end of the beach I came across a very encrusted coin.  Thinking it was just another of our now worthless old 50c pieces I shoved it into my pouch without a second thought and carried on.

At home cleaning the "catch" I picked up this encrusted coin and was about to throw it into the junk pile when I noticed it felt slightly different to an old 50c.  So gave it a scrub and saw a head starting to appear that didn't match any King or Queen I had seen before.  On the other side an eagle started to appear.

1968 Half Dollar.  American silver!  Neat! (well 40% silver...).  There is a small hole in it for a chain which explains how it got to NZ and was lost on the beach.  Not something I would expect to find so its going into the display case.

Now where are those spare batteries - I'm going  Detecting

That's not even a common find here.....too clunky for most people to want to carry around by the time it came out.

Congratulations.

Odd thing is whoever put the hole in it put it so if worn on a necklace Kennedy would be upside down and the eagle up. I would consider the Kennedy head to be the front and eagle back. Unless of course it was a key chain. Nice find though.!!

It's a rock on the ground, it's a specimen when you take it home.

BA,
He got that one right on the "Money". The silver clad halves are not a common find here either.
Lot's of Kennedy halves found but not the 40% ones.
Personnaly I have never found one outside a seeded hunt.
The fact that it had the hole in that spot, well that I suppose is up to debate.
